Burnout in Business: Why It Happens & How to Find Your Way Back

Match sticks in a row. The first is not burn then the remaining, eventually burnt

Running a business is meant to be exciting, rewarding, and full of opportunities. But what happens when the pace of it all catches up with you? What happens when your brain feels foggy, your body feels heavy, and suddenly the business you’ve worked so hard on feels like it’s slipping through your fingers?

That’s burnout — and I’ll be honest, I’m in the thick of it right now.

Burnout isn’t just about being tired. It creeps into your mental health, your physical health, your thoughts, and your confidence. It makes you second-guess yourself and even doubt the business you’ve poured your heart into. It’s overwhelming, exhausting, and sometimes even lonely.

For me, it’s a cocktail of planning a wedding, managing family challenges, balancing a growing business, supporting my fiancé, and trying to squeeze in time to “tone up for the wedding dress.” The truth? It’s a lot. Somewhere along the way, I started losing business, small cracks began to show, and people pointed out my mistakes — not to tear me down, but to help. And still, it stings. Because when you’re burnt out, even kindness can feel like pressure.

If you’re a business owner, you’ve probably been here too. It’s the side of entrepreneurship we don’t always talk about openly: the guilt of needing rest, the fear of letting people down, and the quiet voice in your head that whispers, maybe I’m not cut out for this.

But here’s the thing I’m slowly learning: burnout isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a signal. It’s your body and mind telling you that you can’t pour from an empty cup. And that’s not just okay — it’s human.

So, what can we do to protect ourselves during busy seasons? A few simple but powerful shifts can make all the difference:

  • Structure your week — block time for emails, client work, and admin so you’re not juggling everything at once.
  • Make time for joy — whether it’s a hobby, a good book, or watching your favourite show, carve out guilt-free time for yourself.
  • Prioritise relationships — spending time with loved ones can ground you and remind you what matters most.
  • Move your body — even a short walk, yoga, or a quick gym session helps reset your mind and body.
  • Try mindfulness — meditation or simply pausing to breathe deeply can calm racing thoughts.

Small, intentional choices like these add up. They don’t just ease burnout; they build resilience so you can handle the busy times with more clarity and less stress.

I’ve seen it time and again with our own clients — business owners who felt burnt out, overwhelmed, and ready to throw in the towel. But once they opened up and allowed another set of hands (and eyes) into their business, things began to shift. With someone to help tidy up the processes, take the pressure off, and create breathing space, they found the freedom to focus on something far more important: themselves.

As business owners — and yes, even as VAs — we don’t just witness burnout in others; we feel it ourselves. But the beautiful part is this: we can also witness the transformation that comes when we support each other.

So, if you’re feeling the weight of burnout, remember you don’t have to do it alone. There’s strength in reaching out, and support is always closer than you think. We’re here to help small business!
