If you’ve sold your business or are stepping away from managing your Facebook and Instagram accounts, it’s important to transfer ownership securely and correctly. Meta has made it easier than ever to hand over access through Meta Business Manager – but it still requires a few deliberate steps to ensure the new owner has everything they need (and that you’re no longer attached to the assets).
Here’s how to make a clean handover:
1. Make Sure You’re in Meta Business Manager
If your Facebook Page and Instagram account are not already set up in Meta Business Manager (also known as Meta Business Suite), you’ll need to do that first. Business Manager is Meta’s tool for managing assets like Pages, ad accounts, and Instagram profiles in one place.
To check:
- Visit https://business.facebook.com/ and log in with your Facebook account.
- From the left menu, click Settings and confirm that your assets (Page and Instagram account) are listed.
2. Add the New Owner to Your Business Manager
You’ll need to give the new business owner access as an Admin in your Business Manager.
Steps:
- Go to Business Settings.
- Under Users, select People, then click Add.
- Enter the new owner’s email address and select Admin access (make sure this is someone you trust – this gives full control).
- Click Next, assign the assets (Facebook Page and Instagram account), and grant full permissions.
The new owner will receive an email invitation. Once accepted, they’ll have admin access to the accounts.
3. Transfer Page Ownership (Optional but Recommended)
If the Page was originally created under your personal Facebook account or profile and not claimed by a Business Manager, you may need to assign Page ownership.
To do this:
- Make sure the new owner has their own Business Manager set up.
- From your Business Settings, select Accounts > Pages, click on the Page, then Remove it from your Business Manager.
- The new owner can then Add the Page to their own Business Manager by going to Accounts > Pages > Add > Add a Page and entering the Page name.
Note: Only one Business Manager can “own” a Page at a time.
4. Transfer Instagram Access
Ensure the Instagram account is connected to the Facebook Page inside your Meta Business Manager. If not:
- Go to Business Settings > Accounts > Instagram Accounts.
- Click Add, log into the Instagram account, and connect it.
Then, follow similar steps to assign the new owner full access.
5. Remove Yourself
Once the new owner has accepted access and confirmed everything is working, remove yourself from the Business Manager.
To remove yourself:
- Go to Business Settings > People.
- Select your name and click Remove.
This step ensures you no longer have any administrative control or responsibility.
Final Tips:
- Do not share login details or passwords – Meta access should always be granted through roles and permissions.
- If Ads Manager is in use, make sure to hand over control of the ad account too.
- Encourage the new owner to enable two-factor authentication for security.
